1. Research Summary

The Department of Pediatric Surgery is divided into the Clinical Research Group and the Basic Research Group. The Clinical Research Group addresses pediatric solid malignant tumors, restoration of pelvic nerve function, pediatric endoscopic surgery, and development of new medications because the field of pediatric surgery covers a broad range of areas. The activities of the Basic Research Group include the development of a tracheal prosthesis using rabbits and mTOR gene expression analysis using Western blot.

Development of a tracheal prosthesis using titanium-nickel shape-memory alloy coils

[Description]
Titanium-nickel hyperelastic wires are processed into a spindle coil, which is inserted via a tracheal defect into the trachea to be used as a tracheal prosthesis. The tracheal defect is left open to promote spontaneous repair. Because granulomas are formed around the coil by foreign-body reaction to the coil and invade it, the wires are overlapped in the central portion, which corresponds to the defect, to effectively inhibit granulomatous invasion.

Multidisciplinary treatment of pediatric solid malignant tumors

[Description]
In Niigata Prefecture, we have attempted to improve treatment results by organizing the Niigata Tumor Board and providing prefecture-wide unified treatment for pediatric solid malignant tumors. We have been able to conduct valuable investigations on subjects such as the usefulness of surgical treatment and chemotherapy, and their complications, and late-onset problems by reviewing treatment results obtained over the past 40 years. At present, high-dose chemotherapy on the premise of bone marrow transplantation is used in the treatment of advanced cases, and the treatment results are being analyzed.

Neuromodulation of pelvic nerve function by frequent sacral magnetic stimulation

[Description]
We are performing, as advanced treatment, neuromodulation that restores nerve function by applying frequent magnetic stimulation to the sacrum for rectal and bladder dysfunction refractory to medical treatment with financial aid provided by the scientific research fund. Magnetic stimulation is a painless non-invasive therapy, which is appropriate for children. It has thus far been used in patients with severe constipation and with bladder disorders after pelvic surgery, and has yielded good results.
